My stay at Jizokan Matsuya Ryokan in Nagano was amazing. the location was very central, just a minute walk from Nio-mon Gate. - There was a shopping street and interesting independent stores right next door.

The food was exceptional with plenty of alternatives. The rooms were light filled and large with tatami mats and shower & bathroom plus a great view, nothing too much trouble. The location was marvellous for walking around Zenko-ji Temple. I greatly enjoyed the stay here and will be back.

Excellent choice with any criteria. Very good location in the nicest area just in the threshold to the temple, which is the main attraction of the city. Ambient was exactly want you want to experiment in ryokan, feeling the years the place has seen, but still clean and comfortable, and the old owner couple was like tailor-made to the place.. so warm and welcoming. Even we didn't have language to understand each other, they showed and explained with hands what ever needed to explain. And although there are only public bathrooms in the corridor, as we arrived late, they made bathroom privately for us to have warm and relaxing bath before sleep. And to underline their hospitality, cause we didn't book breakfast, they gave us a juicy apple in the morning to not letting us leave without something to eat. This was first time for us in ryokan and it was exactly the experience we wanted to get.
